Chongqing Longfor Paradise Walk is located in Guanyinqiao, Jiangbei District, Chongqing. It is a shopping center that integrates shopping, leisure, dining, and entertainment. As the core of the Guanyinqiao business district, it has driven the rise and development of the entire commercial area. In 2005, Paradise Walk was voted by Chongqing residents as one of the “China’s Famous Pedestrian Commercial Streets” and one of the “8 Landmarks of Chongqing,” further solidifying its status as a commercial landmark in the city.

作为开业 22年的老牌商业体,北城天街的硬件设施已显陈旧,外立面风格和内部装修与现代商业审美存在差距,品牌落后、动线不合理等问题也都逐渐显现。北城天街作为观音桥商圈的标志性商业项目,面临着城市更新和商业升级的机遇与挑战,其焕新改造对于提升整个商圈的竞争力和影响力具有重要意义。
As a well-established commercial complex that has been in operation for 22 years, Longfor Paradise Walk is showing signs of aging in its hardware facilities. The façade design and interior decoration no longer align with contemporary commercial aesthetics. Issues such as outdated brand offerings and inefficient circulation have also gradually emerged. As a landmark commercial project in the Guanyinqiao business district, Longfor Paradise Walk now faces both the opportunities and challenges of urban renewal and commercial upgrading. Its revitalization is of great significance for enhancing the competitiveness and influence of the entire business district.

How can a traditional box-style commercial complex from over two decades ago break through spatial limitations and reinvent itself from a “closed container” into a “vibrant hub”?
By introducing landscape into the interior space and activating the upper commercial levels (4F/5F), the goal is to create a new experience where architecture and interior landscapes are seamlessly integrated. This approach not only transforms interior landscapes into carriers of new lifestyles and commercial experiences but also aims to convey the core value of a future green “third space” — where architecture is no longer a sealed block, but a connector of diverse activities and foot traffic through this “sky garden” in the upper urban zone. More importantly, it allows people to enjoy the feeling of forest air and natural sunlight indoors.
北城天街室内景观改造融入生态场景,以“高区林里+沐浴阳光+社交体验”为核心理念,通过开放式空间布局,将景观小径自然延伸至室内。立体绿植系统错落分布,搭配枝繁叶茂的铁架木,打造出 “室内森林”的生态意境,让人在商业空间中感受自然的呼吸。
The interior landscape design of Longfor Paradise Walk incorporates ecological scenes, centered on the concept of “urban forest in upper levels + sunlight bathing + social interaction.” Through an open spatial layout, landscaped pathways are naturally extended into the interior. A multi-layered green planting system is arranged in staggered formations, complemented by lush tree-like ironwood structures, creating an “indoor forest” atmosphere that allows visitors to feel the breath of nature within a commercial space.
在传统商业空间植入景观基因,如何跨越技术壁垒、平衡商业属性,破解 “引入易,存活难” 的现实挑战?
老式传统商业空间景观改造面临的问题:
技术层面:需解决无覆土、荷载不足、结构加固、排水不畅、光照匮乏等具体技术难题。
商运层面:需考量植物是否遮挡店招、商业外摆区域与顾客等候区的空间界定等实际问题。
在室内养好植物本身就是一个难题,我们通过实测现场光源,从光照强度、时长、光谱分布等维度,论证植物生长所需的光照条件是否达标。从植物对空间的适配性、意境营造,到根据室内尺度选苗、种植成活,每个环节都是挑战。这不仅涉及植物的品种组合,更需要呈现一种完整的、可持续的自然场景。而这些,还只是打造单一室内景观需要考虑的问题。
How can we embed landscape elements into traditional commercial spaces while overcoming technical barriers, balancing commercial functionality, and addressing the real-world challenge of “easy to introduce, difficult to sustain”?
Challenges in retrofitting traditional commercial spaces with landscape features include:
Technical issues:There are specific technical difficulties to resolve, such as the absence of soil layers, insufficient load-bearing capacity, the need for structural reinforcement, poor drainage, and lack of natural light.
Operational issues:It’s necessary to consider practical concerns such as whether plants obstruct store signage or how to define the boundaries between outdoor commercial displays and customer waiting areas.
Maintaining healthy plants indoors is inherently challenging. We conducted on-site light measurements to assess whether lighting conditions met plant growth requirements in terms of intensity, duration, and spectral distribution. From evaluating plant suitability and aesthetic integration, to selecting appropriate species based on indoor spatial dimensions and ensuring their survival—every step presents a challenge. This process not only involves combining suitable plant species but also requires creating a cohesive and sustainable natural scene. And all of these are just the considerations for developing a single indoor landscape.

The transformation of a core commercial space is a race against time. Throughout this process, we work in close collaboration with teams from architecture, structural engineering, interior finishing, façade design, leasing, and operations. Together, we continuously strengthen site conditions and conduct on-site investigations to ensure the survival of plants in these unique indoor environments.

In crafting plant aesthetics within commercial settings, how can we ensure that plant styles resonate with brand identities? How can species selection complement spatial characteristics?
In the post-pandemic era, people’s longing for nature has grown stronger. We envision indoor greenery as a “gift box from nature,” recreating the native growth environments of plants, aligning with the aesthetic of natural styles, and organically blending into commercial outdoor seating and customer waiting zones. We aim to create a porous relationship between nature and dining areas, allowing people to truly experience the symbiosis between the natural world and built environments.
By layering lush plantings and incorporating natural light through translucent skylights, we create an “indoor garden” with an ecological ambiance—offering both visual beauty and a sense of comfort. Drawing inspiration from silver-gray tones, we subtly highlight the natural textures and patterns of plants, allowing light and shadow to interplay and express a distinctive character, infusing the space with a unique sense of natural rhythm and artistic flair.
在传统商业盒子空间中,我们期望以室内景观构建全新生活方式 。这种多元可能性,正是我们对未来商业场景的探索。这里不仅是多元消费场所,更将成为承载绿色文化的社交目的地。
Within the traditional box-style commercial space, we aim to establish a new lifestyle through interior landscapes. 2025年全面焕新后,北城天街将从 “商业体” 向 “城市生活共同体”蜕变:一方面推进交通枢纽与商场的立体联动,完善智慧停车、线上导览等便民功能,让市民逛街更便捷;另一方面把高街花园的生态理念延伸到整个商场,新增多处绿植景观和休憩区,打造“商圈里的小公园”。未来这里不仅会继续引入国内外知名品牌,还计划定期举办市集、亲子活动等亲民场景,从“购物地标”变成能满足全龄段需求的 “城市生活客厅”,让老重庆人看到熟悉地标的新变化,也让年轻人找到常来常新的理由。
After its full revitalization in 2025, Longfor Paradise Walk will transform from a “commercial complex” into an “urban living community.” On one hand, it will enhance vertical integration between transportation hubs and the mall, improving user-friendly features such as smart parking and online navigation to make shopping more convenient for residents. On the other hand, it will extend the ecological concept of the high-street garden throughout the entire mall, adding numerous green landscapes and rest areas to create a “pocket park within the business district.”
In the future, the site will not only continue to attract renowned domestic and international brands but also regularly host markets, family-friendly events, and community-oriented activities. It will evolve from a “shopping landmark” into a “city living room” that caters to people of all ages—offering long-time Chongqing residents a fresh take on a familiar icon, while giving younger generations new reasons to visit again and again.
