As an ecological barrier hidden within the heart of the city and a culturally rich elevated land, Nanshan stands out as a captivating feature on Chongqing's urban canvas. Amidst the lush greenery and serene waters, the forest trails nestled within nature, along with the ever-changing seasonal landscapes, are intricately connected by roads that mirror the area's distinct geographical character. This integration creates a harmonious coexistence.
Hence, as we embrace the philosophy of "harmonious coexistence of nature and culture", and embark on a truly "context-based" design journey for Nanshan Mountain, it comes to life with a renewed vitality.
Innate ecology and culture, the organic aesthetic of Nanshan
Situated on the southern bank of the Yangtze River in the main city area of Chongqing, Nanshan Mountain spans from Tongluo Gorge in the north to Jinzhu Gully in the south, encompassing a forest area of approximately 45,000 mu. Dozens of peaks rise alongside the river, harmonizing with ancient buildings such as Tushan Temple, Laojun Cave, and Dafosi Temple. Nanshan is renowned as the "lung of the main city", a "natural oxygen bar", and the "crown of the mountainous city" of Chongqing. Its prominent geographical location seamlessly integrates within the main city's "half-hour life circle", making Nanshan Mountain an ideal destination for urban ecotourism and leisure for residents.
To leverage the resource advantages of Nanshan Mountain and transform it into a renowned mountain of natural ecology, urban aesthetics, local culture, and poetic dwelling, the renovation of Chongqing Nanshan Scenic Area is guided by the principle of "ecological priority". The focus is on enhancing landscape quality, highlighting cultural features, and achieving a "harmonious integration of mountains, waters, and the city". The design team adheres to the philosophy of "harmonious coexistence of nature and culture" to revitalize the gateway system, road system, and trail system of Nanshan, systematically reshaping its beauty. This approach embodies the best in local design philosophy—Nanshan's natural ecological and artistic assets become the most optimal design language through adaptive creation. The inherent Nanshan aesthetics, shaped by nature, offer the most direct interpretation of the ecological harmony between nature and culture.
Gateway System: Creating multiple entrances for a park, defining the scenic area boundaries with trees, and sculpting a positive image
The vast expanse of Nanshan is covered by a road system that includes 9 city-level roads: Lameiyuan Road, Nanshan Park North Road, Nanshan Park Road, Longhuang Road, Huangming Road, Guangqian Road, Huangjin Road, Chongwen Road, and Xianghuang Road. Among them, Longhuang Road, Guangqian Road, Xianghuang Road, Huangjin Road, Nanshan Park Road, Huangming Road, and Lameiyuan Road are essential routes for traveling up and down Nanshan Mountain. These 7 major roads form the natural "gateways" to Nanshan Mountain. To address the lack of distinctiveness and guidance in these "natural gateways", the design introduces themed and distinctive mountain gates. These gates serve as landmarks to enhance the tourism image of Nanshan, intensify the sense of experiencing the scenery upon entering the park, and offer services such as tourism transfers, promotional activities, and transit interchange to elevate the overall visitor experience.
The establishment of these 7 major mountain gates along the essential routes of Nanshan, which travelers must pass through going up and down the mountain, serves a fundamental purpose of defining the boundaries of the Nanshan Scenic Area. These gates also function as the primary "iconic structures" within the area, reinforcing memorability and providing clear guidance for visitors. The 7 major mountain gates, guided by the theme of "Nanshan Aesthetics", are designed in accordance with the principles of "context-based design" and "adaptive creation". They exhibit diverse styles, each showcasing unique inherent beauty, united in their distinctiveness, and collectively shaping an image of Nanshan's harmonious coexistence between natural ecology and artistic culture.
Road System: Introducing Nanshan Tourist Map/Road Signage/Request Stop Signs
Nanshan truly embodies the concept of "mountain within the city, city within the mountain". The vast expanse of the Nanshan area is characterized by its distinctive geographical features. Due to historical limitations in urban infrastructure development, various road intersections lacked clear wayfinding signage, request stops suffered from a lack of proper station signs, and essential locations around bus stops and key attractions within the scenic area were lack of adequate tourist navigation.
After redesigning the tourism map of Nanshan, the design team has also incorporated brand-new Nanshan tourism maps at all the key attractions, bus stops, and request stops within the Nanshan scenic area.
In addition, the design has also introduced request stop signs and road-end guidance, in conjunction with the "One Park, Multiple Gates" gateway system. This comprehensive road signage system offers clear navigation throughout the Nanshan scenic area. As a result, it greatly facilitates visitors' transfers, transit, and tourism, and significantly enhances the overall image of the scenic area.
Trail System: Creating ecological and natural pathways, providing the opportunity to explore the joy of the mountains and forests while walking along the trails
The trail system within Nanshan encompasses a total of 19 trails with a combined length of approximately 62 kilometers. The design of the trail system constitutes a pivotal aspect of the comprehensive revitalization of Nanshan Scenic Area. Guided by the principle of "context-based design", the project delves into the historical, cultural, and natural values of each trail. By aligning with the region's functional objectives, these trails are integrated and interlinked to establish three distinct categories: fitness and leisure trails, scenic overlook trails, and historical-cultural trails.
By seamlessly amalgamating natural materials, organic structures, and the surrounding environment, the trails and their adjoining surroundings are harmoniously unified, cultivating a cohesive whole.
Addressing signage and resting facilities along the trails, the design approach revolves around ecological, cultural, and functional considerations. Distinctive elements from each trail are extracted, identifying points of alignment that preserve their unique characteristics while ensuring the cohesive nature of the trail system within the vast expanse of Nanshan Scenic Arez. Moreover, to bolster the fire prevention and control capabilities of the forested trails, the design introduces additional firefighting infrastructure, enhancing the overall amenities of the scenic area. This initiative underscores the commitment to achieving the objectives of regional ecological conservation and restoration.
Ecological & cultural ambiance: Expressing the aesthetics of Nanshan
While rich in cultural assets, Nanshan also faces the current situation of dispersed and decentralized cultural ambiance, hidden within its natural surroundings.
In order to enhance the ecological and cultural ambiance of core attractions, elevate the visual memory points, and establish popular photo spots for visitors, the design incorporates the concept of "Nanshan Aesthetics: Harmony of Nature and Culture". With this theme, a diverse array of materials and vibrant forms are added to create a cultural ambiance system. This effort aims to craft a distinctive visual identity for Nanshan and effectively communicate its unique aesthetic.
Nature and culture are the finest sources of artistic inspiration, and "context-based" design serves as the most fitting connection and expression. Through systematic and comprehensive redesign, the beauty of Nanshan has been revitalized, heralding the blossoming of Chongqing's crown.
