The Field Study House is a key site developed within the International Nature Education Camp in Yongfeng Town. Standing upon this land, your feet rest on soft earth and the air is filled with the fresh scent of greenery, as if the land itself is sharing its stories with us. We see renovation here as a dialogue between architecture and nature. Guided by a philosophy of "minimal intervention," we respect every inch of the land's memory, seeking a point of balance between tradition and the future on this ground waiting to be reborn.
While preserving its original texture, we have redefined the function of the old house—not only restructuring the space, but also reshaping the way of life it represents. Through thoughtful planning and creative design language, it has become a bridge that connects past and future, people and nature. Here, each brick and tile tells its own story; each space serves as a vessel for emotion.
Memory and Place
Approaching this old house feels like stepping into a world etched with traces of time. Moss-covered stone steps, weathered brick walls, and slightly tilted wooden beams all speak of the home's history and stories. It is more than just a house—it is the repository of memories for two generations of families. Every corner holds countless moments of laughter and joy; every detail is a testament to exceptional craftsmanship. In our design, we strive to retain the original spatial layout and building techniques, allowing these precious genes to endure.
The house stands at the heart of the fields, with a wooden structural framework and brick exterior enclosing the space. A stone wall defines the front courtyard, where orange trees and other fruit trees are planted. Stretching out before the courtyard is vast farmland. To the right lies a stand of bamboo that serves as a windbreak, embodying the unintentional wisdom of site-specific ecological systems. This spirit reflects not only the memory of the old house but also the best interpretation of the relationship between nature and the aesthetics of living.
Architecture and Experience
Faced with this long-abandoned and dilapidated house, we adopted revitalization strategies to breathe new life into the design. In the courtyard, the 1.6-meter-high enclosing wall blocks the view from within; a newly added curved roof now forms a configuration that is part pavilion, part courtyard. This arched roof, like a full moon, gently illuminates the fields below.
We preserved the original wooden framework in our design, infusing new colors into the weathered walls. An added staircase of gray bricks leads up to the curved rooftop, where visitors can enjoy panoramic views over endless fields of rapeseed flowers. The interior layout balances openness and privacy: the spacious hall is a place for communal gathering and exchange, while the independent small rooms offer quiet retreats for contemplation and reading.
We have sought to break through the conventional boundaries of traditional architecture, creating an intersection where modern living and the natural environment come together. Every corner and every step carries on the memory of the old house, while also heralding new possibilities.
Transformation and Function
The reconfiguration of functions has brought about a new identity for the site, guided by the overall vision of the project. This is the first, seemingly small but significant, step in revitalizing the area. The old house, once an ordinary home laden with memories, has now been transformed into a vibrant cultural space. No longer a cold and lifeless shell, it has become warm and full of vitality. It now serves as the village's cultural center—children come here to learn, young people gather and connect, and elders reminisce about the past.
We have witnessed the profound impact that architectural transformation can have on the life of a community: it links past and present, allowing the memory of the old house to persist; it connects people to nature, making the building not only a vessel for culture, but a companion in life, shining anew in this new era.
